Evelyn Nesbit

Famous as "the Girl in the Red Velvet Swing," she became infamous when her crazed husband, Harry K. Thaw, shot to death her ex-lover, the architect Stanford White, at Madison Square Garden - one of White's creations. The murder was called "The Crime of the Century," even though the century was only 6 years old. Her story is depicted in the E.L. Doctorow book, "Ragtime," as well as the subsequent film and the current musical.
