In 1903 he became the first person to drive a mile in a minute. By 1910, despite bad dirt tracks, poor-handling cars and heavy engines, he was piloting his Blitzen Benz at speeds of 130 mph. In 1914, he won the Cactus Derby from Phoenix to Los Angeles.
